MONITORING

Steel grass tree
Steel grass trees (Xanthorrhoea) in their natural environment.

Great care is taken to preserve these trees as they live for many hundreds of years. To ensure minimum impact, specially trained staff undertake harvesting by hand.

Steel grass is harvested in forest areas and on private land holdings throughout Queensland, which has an area of over 170 million hectares (more than 2 ½ times the size of France)

A large percentage of our cut foliages are harvested from Native Australian forests in Queensland. All harvesting is sustainable and environmentally friendly with great care taken not to disturb the complex web of our natural forests. While there is a lot of rainforest to be found in Queensland we “DO NOT” harvest from any of these protected forests.
All forest harvesting is carried out on a sustainable and environmentally sound basis in accordance with strict laws and is continually monitored by us and the government’s Department of Environment & Resource Management. We are a unique and very conscientious company in that we commission a regular “independent” environmental audit on the forests where we harvest.
We do not harvest any whole plants from the forest and only take a small amount of the plant's foliage so that no damage is done to the plant and we can return again and again to remove more foliage.
To ensure the health of our forests we continually monitor our harvesting as well with our own team of highly trained officers and a lot of time is spent on teaching the correct techniques to our harvesters before they begin any work in our forests.
We also spend considerable time to research and develop new harvesting and post harvest techniques not only for increasing shelf life but also with a goal of increasing our “green” post harvest credentials.
Example of just one of our many products: Steel grass (Xanthorrhoea)
harvesting Harvesting “Steel grass” is a very specialised job that requires highly skilled and trained individuals.
Looking from above the plant is in 3 concentric circles.
target

The inner circle (white) is not touched as this grows out to become next year’s harvest (sustainability).
The outer circle (dark green) is not touched as this hangs down and eventually falls to become compost for the tree.
The middle circle (bright green) is the area of good length perfect grass which is harvested by hand.

Once Steel grass is harvested it is then hydrated in cool rooms and then shipped on refrigerated trucks to our main packing facility on the Sunshine Coast. Here it is carefully graded, bunched and packed in our temperature controlled facility and exported to the world markets.
